A Love Story: In Their Words |Holly + Bryon | Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard

Holly + Bryon are two of the nicest, sweetest people you’ll ever meet!  Holly and I actually lived down the street from each other and we reconnected over her wedding (reason #1,243 why my job is pretty amazing)! Renee, my second shooter, (Renee Descoutures Photography) and I had so much fun sharing their day with them!!

xo,

Katie

// How We Met \\

Bryon and I met in 2004 while I was installing a new phone system for the bank the Bryon was working at. We each had co-workers that played the part of cupid and encouraged us to get together after work one evening. We dated for a couple of years back then, before parting ways. We had kept in touch, thanks to the Facebook and email.  Fast forward to 2012. I was going to be meeting up with my cousin at a restaurant that Bryon had once recommended. Since he lived close, I worked up the courage to invite Bryon to come down for a drink. Thankfully he did, and after my cousin left, we stayed until the restaurant closed.

// The Proposal \\

One of our favorite things to do is to visit wineries. The day Bryon proposed our morning started as many non-work days do, a pot of coffee, Pandora radio, talking and relaxing. Little did I know that with every minute that ticked by, Bryon was growing more and more nervous. Bryon knew that in November daylight would fade fast, so he suggested going for a drive. Knowing I would never pick a destination worked perfectly for his surprise. Bryon planned an “adventure” day by letting me choose a location at random using index cards, cleverly disguising his plan by giving me only street addresses no business names. It didn’t take me long to realize that Bryon was taking me to a winery, since that’s what we love to do when traveling some place new. I had no idea that at each location Bryon was searching for the perfect spot and perfect moment to get down on his knee and ask me to be his wife.

When we arrived at Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard, Bryon knew it was the place. After sampling a few wines, we decided to enjoy a glass of their favorite before heading home. Little did I know that when Bryon went to order the wine, he was also asking for a recommendation for a quiet place to propose. The woman behind the counter {Louise} was very excited and decided the barrel room would be the perfect place. She snuck their wine into the barrel room. On her way out the open door caught my attention, and I tried to take pictures of the barrels from the tasting room. To my surprise, Louise suggested that I go ahead into the barrel room to get better pictures. (What ? That’s never allowed!) Bryon followed her in and Louise closed the doors to the room. Nervous, at first, that we weren’t supposed to be in there (omg, are we going to get in trouble?) I started snapping away. I was not paying any attention to what was happening behind me. When I turned around I found Bryon down on one knee.

// Our First Look \\

We were back and forth about a first look, but we are SO glad that we decided to go with it. The first look was very intimate. With no one else around we allowed ourselves to laugh, cry, and enjoy time together with just us. Not only did this calm our nerves for the ceremony, but it also allowed us to be able to have a long photo session without our guests having to wait between the ceremony and reception. I suspect you may be wondering “did it made the ceremony less special?” No! It certainly did not take any of the excitement away from seeing each other at the ceremony. It was just as magical as I think it would have been if we had not done the first look.

//Our Most Memorable Moment\\

Pop made it to the wedding! I couldn’t possibly say it better than Katie did on her Instagram post: “When your Pop spends all day in the emergency room because he fell that morning in his hotel room but he then pulls off a game-time decision and gathers up his cracked ribs and superhero strength to surprise you at the ceremony ? You know you have the best, most-superheroesque Pop in the universe.”

// Our Advice To Those Planning a Wedding\\

Have fun! Really! You are getting married because you love each other and want to spend the rest of your lives with each other. Make it a point to have fun WITH each other through throughout the process and you will enjoy your special day all the more. If you’re getting too stressed, take a week off from the planning and remember WHY you are planning this at all.
Stay organized: There is no one best way for everyone, but whatever works for you, do it! The more organized you are, the easier and more fun this time will be.
Go with vendors you feel you can trust, and be clear about your needs/wants but be open to their suggestions. They do this for a living and likely have some great ideas that you haven’t thought of.
